A Note from selectman Richard Beal
I received the following email from Richard Beal on 30 Novmber 2004:... In reviewing your listing of cemetery trust funds, I regret that it is not complete. I refer you to the Town's Annual Report where each year our Town Auditor reports on each trust, but for a brief overview I list below the individual funds:

As reported in the 1985 Town of Cranberry Isles Report:20. Shall the Town of Cranberry Isles accept the proposed donation of $5,000. and thereafter serve as trustee for the Marr-McSorley-MacFarland-Beal Cemetery Trust Fund?

Cemetery Trust Fund
As donors, the Marr-McSorley-MacFarland-Beal families are asking the Town of Cranberry Isles to accept the sum of $5,000. and to serve as trustee of this fund.
The interest from this amount is to be used for upkeep of the Preble Cemetery located on the Preble Cove lot [on Great Cranberry Island]. Any surplus yearly interest, not needed, is to be left to accumulate for future major repairs.

As donors, Vivian Gray and Eleanor Spurling are asking the Town of Cranberry Isles to accept the sum of $1,000. to be used as a trust fund for the strip where the Youngs are buried in the Stanley Gilley Cemetery [on Little Cranberry Island]. Interest is to accumulate until it is necessary to use it.

The Maine Old Cemetery Association newsletter, Fall issue, has some Maine laws pertaining to cemeteries. Readers will be interested in Chapter 83, maintenance and repairs, Town: "In any ancient or public burying ground in which any Revolutionary soldiers or soldier or sailor who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, or Marine Corps in any war is buried, the town in which said burying ground is located shall keep in good condition and repair all graves, headstones, monuments or markers designating the burial places of said serviceman or woman, shall keep grass suitably cut and trimmed on such graves in summer. Towns may raise and appropriate money for such services. Each town shall be liable to a penalty of not more than $100 for neglect to keep in good condition and repair all such graves, headstones, monuments and markers or failing to keep the grass cut on the graves."
Other laws included in the newsletter cover family burial grounds and use of unoccupied interment spaces in cemeteries.
