Cranberry Isles July 25th 1890
per Howard P. Robbins
Dear Sir
We are under the necessity
of calling your attention to your situation in regard to
taxes in this Town on the 1st. day of April 1889, in accordance
with the provisions of the Law in such cases made and provided
a List of Scholars must be returned municipal offices by
the School Agents of the several districts of all the scholars in
their limits on said 1st day of april btween the ages of 4 & 21
years and the agent of School district No. 5 in making up his
return finds 2 scholars under the name of Robbins one called
by him of (one called) Geocie N. Robbins aged 11 years
the other " Clifford W. Robbins " 9 years Now as
a mans temporary residence is admitted to be where his
family resides. If these scholars are found there as represented
they must be a portion of a family within the limits
of said district No. 5 and if so the parties required to apportion
and assign in their division of the school fund their proportion
of the fund as assigned the rest of the scholars which last year
was $4.16.7 or four dollars sixteen cents & 7 mills per head or $8.33
as assigned the district and given scholars had the benefit of its (over)
which amount has been drawn from the treasury of the Town
and paid for Tuition &c of said district No. 5.
In return you are taxed a poll tax of $2.99 for that year which
we understand you refuse to pay consequently the matter was
Laid before the Town at the annual meeting of 1890 & a vote passed
to hold the tax over you and for the collector to collect it and
if you still persist in not paying the tax of $2.99 you will
be responsible to the town for the $8.33 ?had? & received as previously
stated. provided your residence is or was a temporary one BUT
if temporary why are you stationed there PERMANENT at the pleasure
of the government at the injury and expense of the Town
And further on the 1st day of April 1890 the agent has returned
3 scholars which on the same apportionment would amount
to 1/3 more or $12.50 as a fair & plain question who is to pay
this sum while you refuse to pay the poll tax of 1890
we are now in possession of the state amt of school fund
and your case is the matter to be decided as we do not
feel authorized under the circumstances to assign anything
for these 3 scholars until the present difficulty is settled
You will please see this matter attended too soon as practic
able & oblige
