Cranberry House - It's Second Year

The Preble-Marr Museum is now open.  This year’s theme is “Shipbuilding on Cranberry Island.”  The formal opening is July 3rd at 4PM, with a reception, film, and talk by Ralph Stanley, noted historian and shipbuilder.  You will be amazed at our ship model, The Islander (right).

Our new hostess is Blair Smith.  We hope Charlene Allen will be well enough to occasionally stop by.

Hitty’s Café opened to a crowd on Memorial weekend. Kasey Burgess Our new chef, Kasey Burgess, will greet you with a smile and serve you a wonderful lunch.  Her expanded menu includes soups, salads and homemade pie, with daily specials.  Kasey will also offer takeout and catering.  It is so pleasant eating on the sunny deck.

The Cultural Center had an early opening this season.  Movies, complete with popcorn and soda, began in April thanks to Phil & Karin Whitney and Bruce Komusin.

A full summer schedule is planned with classes, lectures, art talks, children’s arts and crafts and concerts.  Classes will include Watercolor, Drawing, Framing, Creative Writing, Rug Making, and Photography.

Three concerts are planned so far, to suit all tastes.  A photography exhibit will include all you photo takers! Check our web site for details: www.gcihs.org

Auction: "Once Loved Arts"
We ask you all to visit your attic and closets for once loved art and treasures for our benefit auction July 22. We’d like art, crafts, quality dishes or furniture you’re no longer using. Please call the museum at 244-7800 and leave your name and the type of donation. We’ll pick it up. We need all your support.

Plus there will be a fun exhibit of recycled art. Try out your talents.

 

Louise Marr
It is with regret we announce the death of our benefactor, Louise Marr. Louise died shortly after her 99th birthday in May. She was a descendant of William Preble and Ben Spurling. Her parents inherited the Preble house, and carefully preserved many artifacts belonging to the Preble family, which Louise gave to our museum. We will miss this spirited lady who had such fond memories of Cranberry Island.

“VERY BERRY FESTIVAL”
Aug 19, from 10AM to 4PM
This is our first annual festival celebrating the fruits of the Cranberry Islands - another fun event for the whole family. Come for lunch and taste berry recipes of all kinds, plus a silent auction of berry gifts.

 

Cranberry House Trail now improved
Thanks to the cooperation of Maine Coast Heritage Trust and our hard workers, the trail has been improved with several new bridges over wet areas, a bench for a needed rest, and general clean-up of the wood path.

The trail was featured in the MCHT annual report, and their latest newsletter included special invitational hiking days for their members. The trail has proved to be very popular with many visitors.
 

We need your membership!
Although the building is finished we still have many ongoing expenses. We still need your help with donations and membership. Please mail in your dues for 2009.

You are invited to exhibit in our

First Photography Exhibition at Cranberry House

"Cranberry Island Inspiration"
Opening reception Sunday, August 2, 2009

Reception includes a talk and book signing of
Walker's Way: My Years with Walker Evans, by Isabelle Storey,
about the noted Depression-era photographer.

Exhibition: 10 am to 4 pm daily, August 2 through 7
(This includes Fair Day, August 5, when we expect a large attendance.)

Details: All work must be priced, and ready for hanging.
25% commission goes to the Historical Society

Receiving: 10 am to 4 pm, Friday July 31 at Cranberry House.
Pick up: 10 am to 2 pm, August 8 though 10
