Baker Island Lighthouse Up for Grabs
The Coast Guard has determined that the Baker Island keeper's house and light tower is excess to their needs. It will be given away for free to an eligible federal, state, or local agency, or to a non-profit corporation, educational agency, or community development organization, for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes. more

Norman Clyde Sanborn Sr. Memorial Service
SEAL HARBOR - A memorial service is planned for Capt. Norman Clyde Sanborn Sr. 10:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at Great Cranberry Island Congregational Church. The service will begin and will be followed by a flotilla and spreading of the ashes. All boats are welcome to join their group and Beal & Bunker will have a boat available for friends who wish to participate, but do not have a boat. Boats will meet at approximately 11:45 a.m. at Cranberry Town Dock (Spurling Cove) and motor to the pool to help celebrate the final voyage of a sailor and lifelong captain who loved the sea. Friends not wishing to join the flotilla are welcome immediately after the church service for a reception and beach farewell at the home of Norman and Kelly Sanborn, where those taking part in the flotilla will rejoin the group. A special boat, The Double B, will be provided by Beal & Bunker Ferry, leaving 9:30 a.m. from Northeast Harbor or 9 a.m. from Southwest Harbor at the upper town dock. A return trip will be provided late afternoon on Beal & Bunker and schedules for both ferries will be available on board. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. obituary

Hitty's Café opens. Great Cranberry Island's newest eating establishment officially opened today, after a 3-day pre-opening "Sweet Sale" over the Memorial Day weekend. Lauren Simmons offers a delicious menu of sandwiches and sweets. Drop by and see the new Cranberry House, too.

Birth of Olivia Grace Johnston. We are pleased to announce the birth of Olivia Grace Johnston, grand daughter of Chris & Vicky Johnston of GCI, and great grand daughter of Elizabeth Hartley of GCI, born today, April 28, at 10:38am at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York. She weighs in at 7 lbs. 11oz. Mom and baby are doing just fine. (announcement from Alex, Kate, and Olivia Johnston)

She weighed 7 lbs 10.3 oz and was 20 inches long. Kelly labored for only 4 hours. They are home and all are doing well. Jessica loves her baby sister." photos
